Stars in this election - 2: Vijay and Vindhya
If the DMK camp gas comedy in Vadivel and glamour in Kushboo, its rival camp too possesses all the metaphors. If you go by the numbers and sway Jayalalitha's camp is marginally up than Kalaignar's camp.
Leading from the front is 'Captain' Vijayakanth. Whatever 'Kaipulla' Vadivelu may say, the prefix of Captain is going to stay and the comedian is sure to have the egg on his face. Vijayakanth may not be great orator but the crowd he manages to pull is terrific. Whether it's for him or the glitter of the bigger ally is to be seen.
If the Captain does not dole out his filmy punch lines in his field campaigns his television channel makes up for the shortage. Vijayakanth owned television channel remixes his hit songs and the ever influential MGR songs to suit his election campaign.
Vijayakanth's famous song "Vachakuri Thappathu" from the film 'Koolikaran' is a propaganda tool with changed visuals for the season. Interestingly T. Rajendher who tuned this song in the 80s is boycotting this election along with his party 'Latchiya Dravida Munetra Kazhagam'. Big deal?
As if he himself is not enough, the Captain is using some ever popular philosophical songs of MGR, again with changed visual to boost his image. "Nalla Perai Vaangavendum Pillaigale" and "Nenjamundu Nermaiyundu" are two remixed version finding a lot of space in captain's television. After Vijaykanth, the Supreme Star Sarathkumar is a star campaigner for the AIADMK alliance. Sarathkumar's campaign is decent and dignified. So is his wife Radhika's campaign. In fact Radhika is on the safe side unlike Kushboo who has her favourite actors supporting her enemy. Actors like Vijayakanth and Sarathkumar are on Radhika's side.
The other actor who is a favourite to both Radhika and Kushboo is Karthik of 'Akila Indhiya Naadalum Makkal Katchi' and he is groping for his place in politics still. So nobody is wasting his or her time speaking about Karthik, not even the comedians who have been given the specific task of firing at actors in enemy camp. Invisible Karthik is surly not bothered.
The glamour quotient in AIADMK star campaigning is provided by Vindhiya. Yes, the same 'Varaka Nadhikarai Oram' Vindhiya. But this time she seems to be feeling lonely because she doesn't have the company of Simran and Kovai Sarala who accompanied her during the previous election campaign.
Vindhya is taking on Vadivelu and DMK single handedly. Of course she advocates small scams are fine and doesn't know what numbers make, but the crowd cheers. Actor Anandaraj is doing his bit. 'Angadi Theru' producer Arun Pandian and 'Nadodigal' producer Michael Rayappan are fighting the elections on Vijayakanth party tickets.
Vijay's father, director SA. Chandrasekaran who stepped in for AIADMK in the last few days is non-committal. In his campaign SAC said he is fed up of the present government and that's why he is supporting Jayalalitha. In between he also threw a bomb saying Vijay may not enter politics for ever. However this has to be confirmed with 'Ilaya Thalapathy' Vijay himself from the sets of 'Nanban'.
If the local stars are breathing fire there are a few imports from across the border. Telugu Mega Star Chiranjeevi has been brought in by the Congress and the effect of that is zero mostly. Bollywood's first Dream Girl and the agmark daughter of Tamil Nadu Hema Malini is campaigning for BJP in Chennai city in areas like Sowkarpet where north Indians live.
Hema Malini campaigns for BJP saying "the party is a nice party" a beautiful party' (yes, the words are her words).
When the local stars are feeling the heat above normal where is the place for these? Lost in the crowd is also Napoleon, K. Bhagyaraj and actor Vaagai Chandrasekar. Similarly Vijayashanthi and Roja did not show their faces this time.
So what is the superstar Rajinikanth doing? He is quieter than ever planning to exercise his franchise only as a true citizen of democracy. However, even if he wants to stay away, politics will not let him to be. The first thing the Ayiram Vilakku constituency DMK candidate did was to meet the star voter of the constituency the super star Rajinikanth for support. That was legal and the super star did not let any other candidate to meet him except Saidai Duraisamy who is contesting against Stalin in Kolathur constituency. Saidai Duraisamy is a Good Samaritan who has created a lot of IAS officers from poor background through his charity IAS training academy.
When opportunistic politics is luring many actors from Kollywood, yet there are a few actors who lend their voice for the elections in a rather unique way.
Surya, Karthik, Jayam Ravi, Suhasini and many others are also campaigning, but not for any known political party. Then what on earth they are campaigning for?
Wait for our next part.
